Smarter, richer – but not taller, please

WOMEN can be more educated
and wealthier than their partners,
but preferably not taller.
This was one of the findings
in a survey of about 800 men between
25 and 59 years old, by
Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of
Business and Accountancy.
It found that 34 per cent of
the men had no reservations
about marrying a woman who
was better educated, earned
more, or came from a wealthier
family.
But if the woman was taller
than them, this percentage
dropped to 22 per cent.
And when it comes to the
trickiest dating question of all —
who makes the first move — six
in 10 men said it’s up to them, as
is footing the bill.
The survey also offered other
insights into the male psyche, including
some double standards.
For instance, half the men would
not marry a woman who smoked,
yet 28 per cent of the men surveyed
were regular smokers.
Twelve per cent of men found
it “forgivable” if a husband has an
affair, compared to only 8 per
cent who were willing to forgive
a wife who strays.
Twenty-one per cent said they
would not marry someone who is
not a virgin, but 31 per cent said
they were “okay” with pre-marital
sex.
Another interesting finding:
19 per cent would pay for sex,
and another 31 per cent were
agreeable to using sex toys to
enhance their sexual relationships.
The survey classified men
by their values and attitudes,
grouping men into four types —
Liberals, Chauvinists, the Confident,
and the Anxious (see box).
Said lead researcher Henry
Koh: “Most studies in the past
looked at the population as a
whole. This time we are going
for a holistic view of men’s values,
lifestyle and activities.”
The survey is the seventh
such annual survey on various
consumer groups by the polytechnic.
KUALA LUMPUR — The Kelantan authorities
have warned waitresses and female
staff of retail outlets that they face a RM500
($214) fine if they wear revealing and tightfitting
clothes, a news report said yesterday.
The Kota Baru municipal council said
it would no longer tolerate indecent dressing
and will begin enforcing an existing Islamic
law that prohibits such dressing, The
Star newspaper said.
Mini-skirts, see-through blouses and
tight trousers are now off-limits for women
of all religions. In addition to the general
dress code, Muslim women are also bound
by law to wear ankle-length dresses and to
cover their hair and forehead.
Kelantan is the only state in Malaysia
which is ruled by the fundamentalist Islamic
opposition party, Parti Islam SeMalaysia
(PAS). Over the past few years, PAS has enforced
radical policies such as having the
lights on in cinemas during movie screenings
and having separate supermarket checkout
counters for males and females.
Yesterday, Kelantan’s local government
committee chairman Takiyuddin Hassan,
who stressed the need for the ban after a
rise in the number of public complaints
over skimpy outfits, said “eye-popping” outfits
invited undesirable attention from men.
“We apologise to non-Muslims if this comes
across as harsh, but we must respect our
Asian culture and religion in public,” he
said. Enforcement officers will step up
checks to enforce the regulation.
There has been growing unease over
the “Islamisation” of the country and recently,
Malaysia has been caught in a debate
over the difference in privileges for Muslims
and non-Muslims.
Reaction to Kota Baru’s new ruling
was varied. While some like Mr Suraya Hulaimi
Sulaiman, 32, from Kelantan backed
the council’s move, women’s groups protested
against it. Ms Ivy Josiah, executive director
of Women’s Aid Organisation, demanded
to know what is considered tight
“for a pair of pants or jeans”. — AGENCIES
Should i even need to elaborate how bastardy men can be?????
I feel lucky that i don't come from Kelantan. Wat the hell.........
